Test and validate quantum sensing technology

We live in a world of sensors. Countless devices around us are constantly measuring and detecting changes in the environment, including temperature, rotation, acceleration, magnetic fields, brightness, and more.

Quantum sensors are a new type of sensor that uses quantum mechanical effects like coherence and entanglement to enhance performance. These effects allow for higher resolution, more sensitive measurements, and smaller or more energy-efficient sensors. This new generation of sensors enables many applications, ranging from improved navigation and radar systems to advanced medical detection devices and climate change monitoring.

At TNO, we have created an open Testbed Facility to accelerate the process of bringing quantum sensors to the market and society. In TNO's Quantum Sensing testbed, SMEs and other companies have easy access to quantum sensors and the know-how required to test their ideas and develop complete solutions.

What can you do at the lab

With TNO's Quantum Sensing Testbed, we can help you understand this new technology, explore the possibilities, and determine how your business can benefit from it. We can perform feasibility studies and test the use of our sensors for your specific needs. Additionally, for companies already producing sensors, we can help benchmark your sensors against quantum sensors.

Our testbed hosts different instruments based on Nitrogen Vacancy (NV) centers in diamond, which can measure magnetic fields, currents, rotation, and temperature. Each instrument has different characteristics and, therefore, different potential use cases. We offer:

Scanning probe microscope:
Non-invasive, high-resolution measurements of magnetic fields, currents, and temperatures

Compact vectorial magnetometer:
A compact instrument that can measure highly sensitive vectorial magnetic fields in different configurations: free space or fiber-based.

Wide field magnetometer:
A wide-field microscope able to image magnetic fields, currents, and temperatures over large areas at high speed.

You have

  • You are in need of new or better insights when measuring quantities like magnetic fields, electrical currents or temperature; or you generally want to explore quantum sensing as an opportunity

You will receive

  • Expert support in identifying use cases for quantum sensing and in developing proof of concepts to show the additional value
  • Access to NV-based quantum sensing infrastructure

Costs

The costs for for using the Quantum Sensing Testbed are available upon request. During a free intake we are happy to discuss your requirements so that we can make a suitable proposal for you.

Proven technology

At TNO we uniquely combine academia, industry as well as government initiatives in a not-for-profit organisation. With our long heritage in relevant technology fields for NV-based quantum sensors together with close connections to relevant markets, we ensure that the technology will meet the required application.
